Tikona Fort means the "triangle fort" is also known as Vitandagad, it’s positioned at an altitude of 3633ft. Lies near the Pavana River, near Kamshet. This fort is exactly situated on Tikona peak near Lonavala, which boasts a very rich history. Tikona Fort is basically a dominant hill fort in Maaval area of western Maharashtra, India. This meticulous fort had witnessed many dynasties ruled in the Maratha region. This fort was strategically very important to keep a watch on the entire region of Pauna Mawal. It was the major command center for many activities in the region during the Maratha rule. It is now an isolated fort, and not much is known about the history of this fort. |
| History Malik Ahmed Nizamshah of the Nizam dynasty conquered it in 1585 and thus it was made part of the Nizam territory. In 1657 king Shivaji conquered Tikona fort. Thus, all areas of Konkan, which earlier belonged to the Nizam's territory, came under king Shivaji’s control. In 1660, Netaji Palkar was assigned the task of ensuring security of fort Tikona. Attractions & Activities The fort houses a Buddhist cave and water tanks which served as the source of water in those days. The main attraction of the fort is the fort's huge entrance. It’s a favorite destination for many trekkers and nature lovers. The explorers might love this site as there are many caves inside the fort and also a temple of Triambakeshwar Mahadev. Sightseeing From the fortress one can have a view of adjacent fort Tung, Lohgad, Visapur, Bhatrashi hill, Morse hill, Jambhuli hill, Pauna region and Fagne dam. Almost the whole of Mawal region is visible from fort Tikona. How to reach There are two paths to enter this small fort from two villages at nearest base from Tikona Peth and Javan. |
