» Lohagad – Lonavala’s Historic Fort

Lohagad Fort Lonavala
Lohagad (Iron fort) is one of the many hill forts of Chatrapatti Shivaji. Lohagad Fort is positioned 10 km from Lonavala, and 52 km from Pune District of Maharashtra, India. This humongous fort lies at an elevation of 3,450 feet (1,052 m). It is situated on the Sahyadri ranges and divides the Pavna basin and Indrayani basin.

Lohagad fort is named after the spiritual leader, Lomesh. This fort belongs to the Satwaahan Period. Lohagad fort was built to observe the activities of Andhra, Nane and Korbaarse Maval. Many powerful rulers, like Mirza Raja Jaysingh and Kutubuddin tried to capture this fort but in 1670 finally Chatrapatti Shivaji captured it from Nizam.

There are three gates one after the other, of which the third gate is quite beautiful. The entrance of this fort, the Delhi Gate, is an impressive one.

There is a huge cave situated outside the fort which was used to store grains during rainy season. On its premises is a tomb and a temple with a Shivling ensconced inside it. There are two tanks to store water and one of it was built by Nanasaheb Phandis.

The fort site is a fine destination for tourist with interests in architecture, archeology and history. For trekker's Lohagad should be a real treat to visit giving a wonderful panoramic view from its top. The best time to visit the fort is in the monsoon season.

How to Reach: Lohagad Fort can be reached by taking the Lonavala-Pune Local and get down at Malavli Railway Station. Lohagad is just seven kms from Malawali.
