» Ancient Karla Caves near Lonavala

Karla-caves-lonavala The ancient Karla Caves lying at a distance of 114 km from Mumbai are one of the finest examples of Buddhist rock-cut caves in India. Dating back to as old as 2000 years ago, these caves located in Karla near Lonavala are exemplary of the most primitive forms of architecture.

History
The Karla Caves where built centuries ago during the rule of the Satavahanas by Buddhist monks. Later on these towering caves where excavated by hewing the rock.
Constructed during the time of the Theravada Buddhists, one cannot find a physical representation of Buddha in these caves but only symbolic representation in the form of elephants, lotus, lions, etc.

Attractions
A narrow winding path of 350 steps leads up to the ancient Karla Caves. Within the main cave is a magnificent Chaitya (praying hall) with intricately carved huge-sized pillars. Inside you can find more such magnificent chaityas & viharas that were the dwelling place of monks. A characteristic feature of these Buddhist caves is their vaulted interiors & arched entrances.
At the entrance of the Karla Caves is a newly built temple accompanied by a carved ancient pillar. Other places where a glimpse of this golden architecture can be caught are the panels of wooden windows & doors carved with beautiful sculptures of embracing couples.

How to Reach
Karla Caves are centrally located between Mumbai & Pune. The quickest way to reach the Karla caves is from Lonavala just 11 km away. However, you can choose one of the other modes of conveyance also.

Rail: Though Pune & Mumbai are important railheads; the nearest railway station is Malavli Station in Bhaja Village, 5 km from Karla.

Air: The nearest airports from Karla town are either at Mumbai (120 km) or Pune (55 km).

Road: Regular bus service from Pune or Mumbai or the twin hill stations of Khandala & Lonavala can take you to the Karla Caves.
