Lonavala is the most attractive hill station of Maharashtra, discovered in the year 1811 by the Governor of Bombay, Sir Elphinstone. It is believed that initially, Lonavala was a thick forest due to which this place was named as "Lonali" that is today known as "Lonavala". However, there are no significant historic evidences to support this theory.
According to the history of Lonavala, in the ancient times, Yadav Kings ruled the city. Later Mughals invaded it and ruled for an extended period of time. After Mughals, the Peshwas and the Marathas establsidhed their rule in Lonavala & it was during this time that numerous forts & other significant sites where constructed in this region. Finally, in the year 1818 the rule of this small town went under the British Empire.
After British rule, with the independence of India Lonavala became the most important hill station of Maharashtra. Hence, Lonavala not only houses numerous modern day tourist attractions but also several historical places to visit. Owing to this rich display of ancient historic sites as well as modern day attractions, Lonavala is considered amongst some of the most sought after hill stations of India.
